About the Owner
I'm John Clevenger, the owner and founder of ProBuild of the Carolinas. I started this company because I saw a real need for a contractor who does things the right way — someone who shows up, communicates clearly, and stands behind their work. Everything we do at ProBuild is built on that foundation.
Building More Than Homes
Growing up in Kentucky, I was always around construction. My father was a hard worker who believed in doing things right, and some of my earliest memories are of helping him with repairs around the house. That hands-on experience gave me a foundation I've carried into everything I've done since.
Sports and music were also big parts of my life growing up. Playing sports taught me discipline, teamwork, and how to push through when things get hard. Music — I played guitar — taught me patience and attention to detail. You can't rush a song any more than you can rush a well-built home. Those lessons stuck with me.
Education & Leadership Background
I went on to study at the University of Tennessee, where I earned a degree in logistics and later completed my MBA. After school, I moved into corporate leadership roles, where I managed teams, oversaw large-scale operations, and learned how to run a business the right way. I also spent time in construction consulting, which gave me a behind-the-scenes look at how projects succeed — and where they fall apart.
That combination of business education, leadership experience, and construction knowledge is something I bring to every project at ProBuild.
Why I Started ProBuild
When I moved to Charlotte, I saw the city through fresh eyes — as a homeowner and a father. I wanted to make sure my family had a home we were proud of, and I quickly realized how hard it was to find a contractor you could actually trust.
I started with a painting business, which gave me the chance to build relationships with subcontractors across different trades. Over time, I saw how much better the experience could be if someone brought all of those services together under one roof — with real accountability and clear communication. That's what ProBuild is.
Doing Things the Right Way
Early in my time running ProBuild, we completed a project that I wasn't fully satisfied with. The client hadn't complained, but I knew the work wasn't up to the standard I'd set for myself. I went back, corrected it at my own expense, and used that experience to strengthen our quality checks across every project.
That's the kind of contractor I want to be — someone who holds himself accountable even when no one is watching. It's not always the easiest path, but it's the right one.
Outside of Work
When I'm not on a job site, you'll probably find me watching college football — I'm a Tennessee Volunteers fan through and through. I also love to travel and explore new places with my family. And I spend a fair amount of time in my woodworking shop, building things by hand. It keeps me connected to the craft and reminds me why I got into this business in the first place.
